Caring for the world starts with caring for yourself
Course Description
In this self-paced online course, you’ll learn about how self-care is a revolutionary act that supports your well-being as well as the progress of social justice movements. We’ll explore practical burnout prevention and stress management tools to support your ability to enjoy your work, advocate for what you care about, create positive change, and protect your well-being.
In Part One, we explore current research on occupational burnout and activist burnout. Burnout is discussed in relation to sociocultural identity, minority stress, systemic issues, and its impact on social justice movements. We’ll compassionately approach burnout as a signal and opportunity for transformation.
Part Two is where self-care meets social justice. We’ll explore deeper meanings of self-care, with a holistic and inclusive approach to self-care as an ethical responsibility and an inherent human right. You’ll also practice self-care strategies to prevent burnout at work and in activism. Experiential practices will be offered to cultivate compassion, courage, and resilience.
This course included so much relevant, eye-opening, and helpful information into more areas of my life than I was expecting.

Ami’s course on the intersections of Burnout, Self-care, and Social Justice is well worth the time. The course acknowledges our need as care providers and activists to be self-compassionate and take time for rest as well as action.
Ami Kunimura is an incredible teacher who embodies the aspects of self-care she teaches. This course helps connect the intersecting areas of self-care and activism with a mix of hands-on practices and in-depth research.
It was all so helpful! I often hear the term ‘burnout’ thrown around and prior to taking this course I had a very baseline understanding of the concept but this course allowed me to deeply explore my own feelings of burnout, understand various facets and types of burnout, and better take care of myself in order to better serve and be more present with the folks with whom I work.
This presenter clearly had a depth of knowledge and mastery of this topic that came through so well in this presentation.
It was fantastic to have language surrounding fatigue that comes with being a professional minority.
Examining the sociocultural perspectives of both self-care and burnout were eye opening to me. And the idea of burn-out as a symptom that can point to where things need to change. Both of these points have reframed how I look at self-care and burnout.
This course included so much relevant, eye-opening, and helpful information into more areas of my life than I was expecting.
This course was excellent. The content was insightful. I enjoyed learning about social justice through the self-care lens. The content was laid out clearly, the pace was just right, the exercises and reflections were poignant, and I learned a lot about myself.
I am so appreciative to see the connection between social justice and burnout and self-care; it allowed me to re-evaluate my internal adjustments regarding my work structure and the impact my sociocultural background can affect my choices in my MT practice and even how I view my self- care practices in relation to therapeutic interventions for my patients.
I never realized that activism could lead to burnout. Now I understand why it can feel draining when advocating for my clients.
So much was very useful. What stood out to me was the fact that rest and self-care are a HUMAN RIGHT. That was very revelatory for me.
I really appreciated the compassionate learning space. I would like to bring this into the courses I teach. Having the different labels of “burnout” explained were enlightening and helpful in separating the concepts rather than feeling the burden of all areas of burnout addressed at once.
